The main theme of the volume, that life is deceptive and human values are built on sand, is proved from all points of view: The seminal event that shapes his life is a four-day affair he has with a married woman, Daphne, in Cape Town while en-route to India during amkr war.
Again, you need the weight of events, distractions, irrelevancies, and time to explore its fullness. It was indeed a nightmare. ,essing usual, Doris Lessing is a master of the literary techniques and the unity of The Qmor is realized by subtle but strong links between themes, motives, narrative perspectives, framing, narrative voices etc.

The last novella gez, “The Love Child” narrates the perils that a group of soldiers have to face during the Second World War, most specifically, in transit on an overcrowded ship. I shouldn’t be living the way I do. We feel, along with James, a love that cannot die, yet cannot be.
