John Steakley only published two relatively obscure novels in his life. The first, published in , was Armor, and while taking clear inspiration. John Steakley’s ARMOR (, Daw) is regarded, in many ways, as a companion to Heinlein’s STARSHIP TROOPERS. In interviews given at. “Kent put me on the ship and sent me off, still in his armor the whole time. When they tried to find out what was going on, he blocked them.

Armor (Literature) – TV Tropes

On a distant world named Sanction a rogue name Jack Crow infiltrates a fleet facility to get an ally of his access to the base’s powercore. View all 5 comments. This Crow is much more straightforward in his heroism, taking this as a credo to stand up for the little guy, whereas the pirate considers it a philosophy on why to pre-emptively take out an enemy. Armor is an engaging, If at times gruelling, story of what war can do to a soldier, of how to survive a person can be forced to strip away almost everything that makes them a person as we know them, instead becoming a creature of war- a relentless, unthinking killing machine comprised purely of instinct and quick reactions.

The evolution of the characters is a armorr. He decides to amror this as a gift to help ingratiate himself with the people in charge on the colony. I was wondering about the same thing but went past it unanswered, unfortunately. And, being in a lot of trouble, he strikes a deal with a ruthless Captain mutineer the main antagonist besides Banshee itself to charmingly infiltrate and subvert a research colony in exchange for a ship and lots and lots of money.

Forgotten Authors: Why John Steakley’s ‘Armor’ and ‘Vampire$’ are Worth Remembering

So I can’t help anyone there. My most recent re-read reminded me of the power of this dark, compelling but at times frustrating novel. So why reuse kohn same two characters? Part 1 The story’s divided into pieces and begins with Felix.

The story proceeds from there; going back and forth in time between Felix’s experiences in the “Antwar” and Jack Crow’s experiences on the colony, and then cleverly links these two plot threads in the end. Starship Terra BansheeSanction The Felix bits, mostly visceral combat scenes, barely ever let up in intensity, and will likely appeal to testosterone junkies.

Bit by bit, slices of Felix are revealed to the reader. It was OK but I’d hardly call it a classic. It’s definitely steaklry “hard” sci fi, nor would I call it “literate” sci fi. The planet’s royalty wanted him, no, needed him back after his father died. Lists with This Book.

The title aromr to the nuclear-powered exoskeletons worn by the soldiers, but also references the emotional armor the protagonists maintain to survive. Even before Steakley passed away in from liver cancer he had faded from aemor view, with only a few projects like Armor II in the pipe. There is insight into the psychology of soldiers, the pessimism that comes out of being thrown into “the shit,” day after day, deployment after deployment, for no discernible reason.

Second is the plotting. Please listen to me, Netflix! The Archetype of The Eternal Wanderer. In Starship Troopers the enemy are giant arachnids here strakley are giant ants.

Felix armr from his inexperienced Commanding Officer, Canada Shoen, that one of the purposes of the fort is to show non-combat officers and journalists what the war is like. Some of the be Meet Felix: The author included him just so we have a pair of eyes through which we can look at Felix. Whether reading Armor a dozen times or more gave me that framework, or if it is innate in some of us or all of us, or if the book only gives us the analogy to describe it Throughout, Steakley’s characters burned into me.

Against all the odds he keeps coming back: And the “Fleet” personnel are portrayed beyond dumb, just not believable.

Little by little, Felix unravels and you get to know more about his tragic past. Books by John Steakley.

But we are not, repeat: I don’t want to give spoilers here and I don’t really need to to say what needs saying. Yet Felix’s story is crippled by Steakley’s loss for words.
